Giant Sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum, Tree Seeds Bonsai, Fast Growth, Long Lived, Shade Tree, Christmas Tree, Evergreen, Specimen Tree, Timber Giant sequoia has the most massive size of any tree in the world. It is a beautiful, dense, needled evergreen conifer that is native to groves scattered through coniferous forests along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (4500-8000 feet in elevation) in central California. In its native California habitat, mature trees will often grow to 200 to 280 feet tall, with trunk diameters ranging from 15 to 24 feet. Trees may live 2000 to 3000 years. Young trees have a pyramidal-oval shape. As trees mature, they begin to lose branches from the lower part of the trunk. Trees feature attractive dark cinnamon-brown bark with deep furrows and ridges, small, scale-like, blue green needles and fruiting cones to 3 inches long. ....Culture: Giant sequoias are cultivated in Europe and eastern North America as well as the US West Coast. They do best in a moderately fertile, deep, well drained soil, in full sun to partial shade. They like a cool climate. Giant sequoias grow rapidly for the first few centuries and then slow down as they surpass 150 feet in height. ..... Uses: Shade tree, Bonsai. In its natural habitat, this is a very large tree that needs a very large space. In the right climate, young trees make attractive additions to large gardens. ..... 3. All Elevations Unknown: An Adventure in the Heart of Borneo

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

Sam Lightner, Jr., combines two tales of adventure, one historic and the other modern-day in his page-turner . . . With its rich sense of place and history, All Elevations Unknown offers a surprisingly fresh twist to an adventure-climbing tale. Climbing Magazine

In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a description from a book and a map labeled all elevations unknown, Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. What little they knew about the mountain they had learned from the memoirs of Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who in 1945 had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rainforestwhere the natives had a grisly habit of cutting off headsto try to reclaim the island for the Allies.

A captivating, utterly original combination of travel adventure memoir and historical re-creation, All Elevations Unknown charts Lightners exhilarating and at times harrowing quest to ascend the mountain Batu Lawi in the face of leeches, vipers, and sweat bees, and to keep his team together in one of the earths most treacherous uncharted pockets. Along the way, he reconstructs a fascinating historical narrative that chronicles Tom Harrissons adventures there during the war and illuminates an astonishing piece of forgotten World War II history. Rife with suspense and vivid detail, the two intertwining tales open up the island of Borneo, its people, and its history in a powerful, unforgettable way, taking adventure writing to new heights.
