Unlike mercury based or battery-powered thermostats, the ecobee SMART Si thermostat requires a C (Common) wire to provide constant power. If a C (Common) wire is not available or you do not want to run a new wire, you can purchase a Power Extender Kit through ecobee, which will enable you to power your system and still make use of four wires for one heat/one cool HVAC systems.
