By 1779 blue coats became the new national uniform faced or 'turned up' with various colors to indicate which region of the country the regiments came from. Soldiers from New York and New Jersey wore buff facings with soldiers from the New England states having white lapels, collars and cuffs. Red facings distinguished the soldiers of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, and blue were from the Carolinas and Georgia. These figures represent the mid-Atlantic state regiments of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia with their red facings. These troops were in the outposts on the Western frontier, making them great opponents for the Woodland Indians and Butler's Rangers already released.

8. First Legion AWI082 Woodland Indian Standing Ready with Musket

Feature

1:30th Scale, 60mm, approx. 2.5 inches tall
Hand Painted Metal Figure
1 Piece, Single Figure
American War for Independence

Description

First Legion is extremely pleased to present the first of Woodland Indians for the American Revolution! While part of the American Revolution product range, these figures are of course perfectly useful for a much wider time period including but not limited to the French & Indian War. They can represent such tribes as the Iroquois speaking Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and Huron or Algonquian speaking Abenaki, Chippewa, Delaware, or Mohicans. The Eastern Indians were the first to make contact with European settlers and had both periods of peace and trade as well as periods of conflict with various tribes and with European settlers and armies siding with one side or the other, thus allowing these figures to be used as allies to either side or even fighting each other.

The use of horses was not as common among the Woodland Indians as it was on the Great Plains. However, the horse was often used mode of transportation in the later years of the eighteenth century. The Shawnee tribe in the Ohio Country were known for using horses, with many historical documents making references to large parties of native warriors traveling throughout the upper Ohio Valley mounted on horses. The horse also enabled the eastern natives to become less nomadic by using horses as beasts of burden, and the Indians of the Eastern Woodlands could travel further afield for trading, hunting and to gather sustenance. This allowed native communities to remain in one place longer.
