Oh the Grand Laker! Wow, this was the canoe that changed the life of the many guides and sportsman on the great lakes of Maine and the far north. Before the outboard was invented, the guides and their fishing clients were towed to the secrect fishing spots, then towed home at the end of the day. then came along the 8 hp Johnson outboard. So a square stern with a wider midship for larger carrying capacity was built, racing back and forth unencumbered, with new outboard. This new innovation soon became the must have. Guides were charging $2 more a day. The Grand Laker freighter canoe was born. Today they are still being widely used, and very saught after. This is a beautiful kit in all details, even with a real life like outboard. Like all of our kits, it starts with the locally harvested white pine strips, red cedar toe rails, seats, thwarts, breast hooks, mahogany transom, stem laminates, CNC cut plywood forms that the canoe is built over. Plus, not included with any other kits, is the outboard, which is scaled and made specifically for this model for a real life likeness. The outboard kit is cut on a CNC and has to be assembled. This is truly a work of art, and anyone with basic hand tool knowledge can build it. You to can say "I built it myself". The finished canoe will be cherished for generations. Red Cedar inner and outer toe rails, seat frames, thwarts, breast hooks and a thin clear red cedar ribbing which easily conforms to the shape of the hull for actual ribbing. Real seat caning material for a truly life like look. In fact, a picture of this finished canoe in the water is hard to tell if it is real or a model.
