This tree is an excellent candidate for indoor growing. This plant forms aerial roots with ease in moist conditions which gives each tree its own character. The aerial roots come from the side branches and from old bark under a heavy foliage canopy with high humidity. This tree originates from Southeast Asia and in nature can attain a height of over 50 feet. This tree typically grows in a multi-trunk style with a wide canopy. Indoors trim at any height. The typical leaf is oval with a slight point. The bark is gray and smooth. The green island ficus produces a fig approximately 1/3 to 1/2 an inch in diameter. The figs start out green and mature to red before turning black and falling off. The seeds are not considered tasty to humans, but birds will eat the fruit. Seeds on an indoor tree are reported to be infertile due to the absence of the fig wasp that is needed to pollinate the figs to seed. As do most bonsai, the green island ficus will do best in bright light, but will also grow under fairly dim lighting conditions. For the best results try to keep the tree in the brightest location in your home. Give the plant as many hours of sun as you possibly can. Try to avoid full mid-day summer sun if you keep the plant outside. The perfect condition for this plant is outside under a screened enclosure. Ficus bejamina is native to India, Southeast Asia, Southwest Pacific, and Northern Australia. Great bonsai tree potential. Easy to care for and fast growing. If left to grow naturally, it reaches 40-50 feet tall. This evergreen tree produces good branching characteristics, outer branches tend to be pendulous. The tree trunk is very smooth and lightly pale brownish colored. Under humid conditions, and as the tree matures, branch-like aerial roots are produced from the branches. Those exposed roots provide character to the tree. The roots of this Ficus form secondary trunks. The Weeping Ficus has gracefull arching slender branches with pointed, very small, shiny, leathery, dark green leaves. New leaves are very light green in color. Rarely flowers indoors. Small round axillary fruits in pairs are rarely seen on indoor plants, in large part because of the absence of the necessary pollinating wasps. Hardiness zones 10-11, (1C,35F/5C,40F) in Winter. Ficus do well in a well-drained, peat-based potting soil. Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, they don't like whether dry nor too moisten soil conditions. Reduce watering from Fall to late Winter. This plant may be taken outside in Spring after last frost date and brought back inside in Fall. It may lose leaves if there is too much water or not enough light, but it tends to be very tolerant of adverse conditions.
