Description

The evening before Louis Armstrong recorded this album, both he and Miss Fitzgerald were appearing in an all-star concert also featuring Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson that was recorded for an album entitled Live At The Hollywood Bowl (1956). The following day the two singers, along with the Oscar Peterson Trio, were in a Los Angeles studio to record this gem of an album. With no time for rehearsals the songs were all set in Louis' key to make it easier, but this in no way inhibits Ella's performance. Another challenge for Pops was the fact that the material was not his normal repertoire, meaning he had to learn things on the fly in the studio. Again there's no hint of any issues, which all goes to highlight Armstrong's innate musical ability.

Description

Limited edition 180-gram vinyl LP reissue. Satchmo and The Duke were each in the midst of revitalized careers that were soaring higher than the fame of their youth when they joined forces to record "The Great Summit" in 1961. Each already was an unparalleled legend for nearly 30 years, and it is surprising they hadn't recorded more together. But then their styles were so different. Ellington was the sheer embodiment of sophistication and elegance in jazz. Armstrong was the earthy pulse of the people at large. Each had a ceaseless creativity and vitality that could only be matched by the other. All stylistic differences aside, few musicians on earth have had their sense of swingin' rhythm. This reissue remains a musical feast for the ears as Louie puts his own take on the music as Duke performs his biggest hits! You'll be blown away on "Mood Indigo;" "Black and Tan Fantasy;" "The Mooch;" "In a Mellow Tone;" "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got that Swing)" and more. It couldn't possibly sound better than it does on this 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

Description

Louis Armstrong and his All-Stars are captured in rare form during this live recording from 1956, which is finally making its vinyl debut with this 180gram Pallas pressing. The album features a great collection of tunes which had become staples of Armstrong's live shows, including his perennial opener, "Indiana"; the crowd favorite, "Tiger Rag"; the always joyful, "When The Saints Go Marching In"; and the great title-track, "Basin Street Blues". Satch's frontline band at the time boasted the very distinctive sounds of trombonist Trummy Young and clarinetist Ed Hall.

9. Jazz is Back in Grand Rapids (2 LP)

Description

This 1956 concert by Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars is a historical gem, which is finally getting its vinyl debut with this double LP release. Recorded on March 26, 1956, at the Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, MI, it affords jazz fans a chance to hear what the barnstorming Armstrong's shows were like in heartland America. Armstrong's affable presence is pervasive, but not always center stage, as each member of the All-Stars gets his turn in the course of the revue. The release was remastered for vinyl from analog tape and pressed at Pallas Group in Germany.

10. Satch Plays Fats + 2 Bonus Tracks

Description

About this thirty something, The Callstore, based in London for 15 years, we know both a lot... and very little. The debut album, 'Save No One', self-written, recorded and produced, with the fine discoveries that resulted from the circumstances of its making is a compendium, a teeming universe, a great record, bruised and profound, that plays like an equilibrist on a tight rope.
