These do work well for small diameter line, but you do need to learn how to string them (it took me a while to figure it out).
Tie a larkshead knot on one side of the tightener, then make a loop through the same hole you tied the line to.
This loop will go around the ground stake. Pass the line through the second hole - so that the line passes over the indent on the bottom "V" side of the tightener.
Tie this end of the rope to your tent/tarp tie down. To tighten the line, slide the tightener up the line, and slide down the line to loosen.
